"Update me on your visa" is the question I hear on the reg, and from what I gather, I'm lucky because if I wasn't waiting on a visa I'd be getting asked when I'm having a baby. So there's the silver lining to this whole process.
The short answer is that I should be back by mid-November.
But, as with most questions, there's actually a more accurate long answer. The thing is, I don't really know much about the visa. My biometric appointment was September 24, and I sent in my visa application (with an expedite request (££)) the day after. According to the nice people who charged me over £5 to assure me they couldn't really answer any of my questions, it will take 30 working days from the bio appointment, which means we should have a decision on November 5. Which way this decision will go is anyone's guess, but it should be done. Then, they'll send the visa to me which I anticipating taking approximately a week. So, if everything goes well, I could be back in the UK by mid-November.
As we all know, though, it's never this easy. They could just issue an outright denial. It's unlikely, because I'm a strong candidate for the visa, but it could happen. They could issue it early, so I'd get the paperwork back by November 5 (in my experience, this is the least likely option), or they could issue a request for more information because a) they need it or b) they need to buy some time. I saw or heard of this happening with a lot of US-based applications in my previous job.
And there you have it. I shall keep ye posted.
